File names and folders
Build every file name, and the folders inside your ZIP, from a pattern of variables and your own text.
The pattern
Set the pattern under Custom filename format in the Insert and Export dialog. The default is {group}/{layer}-{width}x{height}, which puts each size group in its own folder. An Example line below the pattern shows the first real file name as you type.
- Click a variable button to add it. Click a part of the pattern to remove it.
- Choose Edit as text to type the pattern freely. Variable buttons then insert at your cursor. Use chips switches back.
- Reset returns to the default pattern.
Variables
| Variable | Becomes | Example |
|---|---|---|
{layer} | Source layer name in Figma | Alpine escape → alpine-escape |
{group} | Size group | Display Ads → display-ads |
{size} | Size name | Story and Reel → story-and-reel |
{width} | Output width in pixels | 1080 |
{height} | Output height in pixels | 1920 |
Variable values are made lowercase, and their spaces become hyphens. Text you type yourself keeps its capitals and spaces.
Folders
Type / to start a folder inside the ZIP. Use _ or - to separate parts of a name. A / inside a layer name never creates a folder. It becomes a hyphen.
Examples
| Pattern | File |
|---|---|
{group}/{layer}-{width}x{height} | instagram/alpine-escape-1080x1080.jpg |
{layer}_{size} | alpine-escape_story-and-reel.jpg |
My Assets/{group}/{size}/{layer}_{width}x{height} | My Assets/display-ads/medium-rectangle/frame_300x250.jpg |
Automatic clean-up
Croppy keeps every name safe to open on Mac, Windows and Linux:
- The file extension (.jpg or .png) is added for you.
- Duplicate names get
-2,-3and so on. Names that differ only in capitals count as duplicates. - Characters that are not allowed in file names, such as
: * ? " < > |, become hyphens. - Very long names are shortened in the middle, keeping the end, which usually holds the dimensions.
- Folders can go up to 8 levels deep.
